Personal Branding and Your Online Presence Write Up


On January 30, 2013, the SLA Student Group and the iSchool’s MLS program welcomed Justin Hoenke, Rebecca Goldman, and Naomi House for a workshop that focused on building a personal brand and online presence. You can review Justin and Rebecca’s presentation’s here (unfortunately our technical difficulties rendered Naomi’s presentation inaudible). Justin Hoenke, the teen librarian and video gaming enthusiast at the Portland (Maine) Public Library, opened the discussion.  Justin is known for his “Justin the Librarian” cartoon avatar that was actually designed by one of his teen patrons.  In his discussion of personal branding and creating an online presence, Justin emphasized the central importance of sharing and creating a community.  How do you create an online presence?  In Justin’s words, “Find something you dig.  Focus on it.  Repeat.”  Establish a theme…
