A quick visual history of Massimo Vignelli’s NYC subway map designs

City transit maps are not only practical to the well-being of thousands of commuters daily, but have become pieces of art, utilizing the essence of its city and its citizens. New York transit maps are an excellent example of how function and beauty intertwine, evolving with the tastes and necessities of a growing mecca.

This afternoon, transportationnation.org released a great mini-history of Vignelli’s work with the MTA and how the designs have evolved over the last 30+ years.

Among the stunning visual examples of how the MTA map has changed over the years are quotes from a talk Vignelli gave at the MTA New York Transit Museum a few months ago. Still an amazing innovator, and still looking to the future of informative art.
