snail mail is the new email.

So, now that we’re on a ‘letter kick,’ here’s a story that blossomed just a week or so ago! Author Stephen Elliott and literary site Rumpus, upon missing the anticipation of actual, physically-written posts in their mailboxes, have started a literary star-studded letter writing service. For $5 a month, you will receive a letter from a famous author or literary notable, and pending their inclusion of their own address (or a suitable PO box), you can return their letters, pen-pal style. Subscriptions are both domestic and international, and have already gained popularity from such far-away locales as Sarajevo, Australia, and Greece.

So far, the following authors have signed up for the service, with more forthcoming as the start-up gains in popularity and literary nerdery: Dave Eggers, Marc Maron, Stephen Elliott, Janet Fitch, Nick Flynn, Margaret Cho, Cheryl Strayed, Wendy MacNaughton, Emily Gould, Tao Lin, and Jonathan Ames.
